Fraxel Laser Treatment
The Sloane Clinic is now using the flagship Fraxel:restore for optimal skin rebirth, with exceptional results for severe acne scars, enlarged pores, stubborn pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
The Sloane Clinic pioneered the use of the Fraxel laser in 2005. Dr. Kenneth Lee is a regional trainer for Fraxel and teaches Fraxel laser treatments to other doctors in the region.
How does Fraxel work?
Fraxel™ Laser Treatment improves your appearance by affecting only a fraction of your skin at a time with thousands of tiny microscopic laser spots just as a photographic image is restored, pixel by pixel.
How will I feel after 1 session?
After your very first Fraxel Laser Treatment, you will begin to feel the difference in your skin, as it gradually becomes softer, smoother and fresher. Fine lines around your eyes and acne scars will noticeably fade, along with uneven skin colour and the brown spots caused by ageing and sun exposure.
After a few treatments, your skin will take on a distinctly youthful and healthy appearance. Even deep acne scars will gradually disappear and your skin will look smoother and more refined.
What is the difference between Fraxel Laser Treatment (FLT) and traditional lasers?
Fraxel is the world's pioneer fractional resurfacing laser. This novel fractional approach to laser skin treatment represents a new breakthrough as it offers patients the positive results of ablative resurfacing with the low-impact benefits of non-ablative therapies. Unlike old ablative lasers that remove the top layer of skin, FLT procedure produces tiny, microscopic sites of thermal impact separated by areas of unaffected, healthy tissue. The spared healthy tissue between treatment zones contains viable cells that promote rapid healing of the outer skin layers.
The innovative Fraxel SR Laser is specially designed to alter only fractional volumes of the target tissue. Similar to precise alteration of photographs and paintings, the clinical effect of this treatment technique is to alter the appearance of aging and sun-damaged skin without the risks of long downtimes and severe side effects. Overall, this makes Fraxel an exceptionally effective laser for stubborn problems such as acne scars and deep pigmentation that are not successfully treated by traditional methods.
What kind of problems can Fraxel treat?
Fraxel is excellent for treating deep acne scars, stubborn pigmentation including melasma. It also provides an overall skin rejuvenation and refreshes the skin so new skin looks younger, softer and smoother.
What is the downtime?
There is 4 to 6 days of redness and mild flaking, with most patients reporting that they look "sunburnt". However there is minimal discomfort and patients may apply make-up immediately after treatment and return to routine activities if needed.
A few patients may also notice mild bronzing that lasts anywhere from 3 to 14 days, depending on the treatment level. This is a result of a high treatment level and is not an atypical side effect. You can however discuss with your doctor on the optimal treatment level to suit your skin and lifestyle.
How many sessions do I need?
Clinical studies suggest that 3 to 5 treatments spaced about 1 month apart to produce a gradual remodeling of dermal matrix components, until complete healing occurs and "good" material that contains collagen and elastin replaces old epidermal and dermal tissue. Over a period of 1 to 3 months, clinical improvement in photo-aged skin correlates with dermal repair and positive skin changes.
What is a typical treatment like?
Anaesthetic cream is applied for 45 to 60 min to numb the skin. The doctor will guide the Fraxel hand-piece across the skin. You will feel some hot, prickly sensation as the spray of microlaser beam covers the treated area to effect the positive skin changes. Please leave 2 hours of your time free for the entire treatment (including pre-laser numbing, and post-laser cooling) to be completed.
What can I do to care for my skin after the treatment?
Be sure to use sunscreen at least twice daily to protect your skin from sun exposure during both the healing phase and for several months after treatment. Apply a moisturizing sun block with an SPF 70. For added protection, use wide-brimmed hats when in direct sunlight.
Your doctor may also prescribe some anti-redness creams to speed up your healing process. If you are looking to reduce the duration or severity of your redness even more rapidly, you may want to consider our Luminous Program. This program comes with a series of post-Fraxel photobiomodulation light therapies so your treated skin heals rapidly, and the results of the Fraxel laser are enhanced.
